Friday night at about 9:50, I was riding my carbon fiber Trek westbound in the center lane (of three) on Waialae, a few hundred yards down from the Humane Society. I was coming downhill at somewhere around 20-25 miles an hour when an eastbound Honda Civic turned across my line of traffic to get into the Weinberg Hale driveway. I struck his right rear quarter panel at a relative velocity of something like 30-35 miles an hour. I flew what we later figured was at least 20-25 feet, landing on my left hip, elbow, and hand and sustaining minor injuries including multiple contusions and abrasions and several bruised ribs. I immediately began yelling for help, and the driver of the vehicle parked it on the Weinberg Hale driveway and came to my aid. I requested that he get my bike and some of my personal articles from the road, and sat down to assess the damage. A bystander unfortunately chose to call the police and emergency medical services against my ardently expressed wishes, and they arrived five or ten minutes after her call. I was examined by the EMTs, bandaged and iced and pronounced reasonably fit, and signed a form indicating that I had refused transport to an emergency room. I told the police and EMTs basically what had happened as far as I could determine, and I believe the police took a statement from the driver. I was then presented with a ticket totalling $122 for two violations: riding an unlicensed bicycle, and riding without illumination or reflectors. I'd like to note that my visibility light is being repaired, and this was the first time I'd ridden without one in over a year. I intend to appeal the visibility ticket on those grounds and see if I can't get it reduced. So, in conclusion: fuck the police, those fucking pigs, and also fuck any bystander who doesn't trust my ability to determine my own medical state. If I ever am in this position again, I will punch the bystander in the face before I let her call the cops. Oh yeah -- for the curious, I'm pretty sure he didn't signal.
Oh yeah, and I left a three- or four-inch-deep dent in his quarter panel. Fair trade for my wheel, I think.
And now, pictures.

more bike shit.
finished my indoor rack for the valuable bikes today. too bad i have more valuable bikes than rack space! probably the carbon trek will end up on it instead of the cannondale, just because of the whole UV issue. we'll see.

more truck. and stuff.
installed the fridge friday night. tested the counter on saturday. took the truck for a spin to UH instead of taking the bus in -- damn thing nearly gave me a heart attack three or four times. added cold ATF (russian roulette ATF! yay!) and it felt like the autoclutch was having a hard time disengaging... thought i had fucked my transmission, but i let it run for a bit and it was fine. then a couple scares on the pali... anyway, pictures.
i used uni-strut parts and cable tray parts to make the anchor plates and clamping mechanism. the band is a big ol' piece of stainless that we were going to use for welding practice. | | Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | | 7:28 pm |
so i got a postal van. it's a 1984 AM General with 50,000 miles on it. automatic transmission, straight six, half ton rated capacity (hah).

The rust is all surface rust.

Full frontal. Needs a little touchup work and some welding on the hood.

From the side.

The engine, from the inside.

The cockpit.

View in from aft.
it needs a little work... but it'll make a great work truck. runs like a tank. should be a lot of fun. |
